International travel and immigration procedures continue to evolve, particularly across the Schengen Area.
One of the most important developments is the European Union’s Entry/Exit System (EES), which has been fully operational across external Schengen border checkpoints since 10 April 2026. Instead of relying mainly on passport stamps, the system digitally records the entry and exit of non-EU travellers, including passport details, facial images and fingerprints.
The EES helps European authorities monitor the 90-day stay within any 180-day period, identify overstays and strengthen border security. Travellers should therefore ensure that their documents, declared travel purpose, accommodation and supporting information are complete and consistent.
Another upcoming change is ETIAS, which is expected to begin during the last quarter of 2026. ETIAS will apply mainly to eligible visa-exempt travellers. It is a travel authorisation—not a Schengen visa—and it is not yet accepting applications.
